Midtown Farmers' Market seeks Manager

Interviews begin after January 1, 2009 -- position open until filled

Program Overview: Started in 2003 as a grassroots effort of south Minneapolis neighbors, the Midtown Farmers' Market brings farmers and shoppers together in a weekly celebration of local foods and community. The Midtown Farmers' Market offers local, sustainable foods and unique arts and crafts in a colorful, vibrant urban setting. Each week from May through October, the market hosts local musicians, cooking demonstrations, and celebrations of the nearby neighborhoods' exciting cultural diversity. The Midtown Farmers' Market runs a Saturday morning market (May-Oct) with over 40 vendors at peak season and a smaller Tuesday afternoon market (July-Oct). Located at the intersection of Lake Street and 22nd Avenue S, near the Midtown Station of the LRT, the market draws shoppers from all over the Twin Cities. The Midtown Farmers' Market is a project of the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization (CNO) and directed by a volunteer Advisory Committee, the CNO Board of Directors and the CNO Executive Director.

Educational Level: Bachelors Degree

Hours: This is a 32 hour a week position, with the potential for full time employment. It is expected that the Market Manager will work an average of 32 hours per week with seasonal variation. Weekend and evening hours are required.

Salary: $25,000-$27,000 for 32 hours a week, plus benefits

Job Duties:
1. Manage an excellent and diverse mix of local vendors
2. Oversee all market day activities, including vendor and customer relations, set-up and tear-down, special events, and equipment maintenance.
3. Fundraising and financial management:
a. Secure and manage the market budget, track income and expenses, account for the token system, and collect vendor fees.
b. Recruit sponsors for Saturday and Tuesday markets
c. Identify and secure grant funding for operating expenses
d. Work with Advisory Committee to increase individual donations
4. Supervise Assistant Market Manager; hire and supervise seasonal staff and interns.
5. Manage or delegate specific administrative tasks such as website and database maintenance, coordinating the market advisory committee, data tracking, vendor applications, mailings, and communications.
6. Promote the market using various promotional strategies; primarily through creative, low-cost marketing techniques and effective local partnerships
7. Recruit, train, coordinate and acknowledge market volunteers
8. Work with the Advisory Committee to plan and oversee market day events.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Proven leadership and problem solving skills
* Knowledge of and passion for farmers' markets and local foods
* Excellent verbal and written communication
* Flexible, organized, and able to prioritize
* Financial management experience
* Staff and volunteer management experience
* Familiarity with South Minneapolis' diverse community
* Computer skills (Word, Excel, File Maker Pro, Dreamweaver, etc.)
* Capable of sustained physical work outdoors, including lifting up to 40 pounds in weight
