The
Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) is an award-winning, nationally recognized community-based organization in South Minneapolis on the cutting edge of community development. LNA is currently seeking an experienced community leader to serve as
LNA's Community Organizer for the Somali/East African Community.
We are currently seeking a part-time Community Organizer to help LNA build connections between Somali and nonSomali community members in Lyndale. The organizer will work with the Somali community to identify issues and opportunities facing the community and to help develop programs, services, and activities that meet the community's needs. The position's primary function is to ensure that the Somali community in Lyndale are active participants in LNA's work to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.
Brief Job Description:
This part time position will report to LNA's Community Organizer and will:
* Lead the new East African Cohort of the Lyndale Women's Leadership Program, which includes program development and facilitation.
* Conduct general outreach activities to provide a first point of access for Somali families in the community.
* Work with Somali and nonSomali community members to help create cross-cultural connections.
* Bring community members together through facilitating meetings, organizing events, and leading volunteer activities to help ensure they have the opportunity to shape their neighborhood's direction.
* Help to build community by supporting LNA's volunteers, the Youth and Parks committee, new ESL program, and community events.
* Lead LNA's Somali Reading Program, which helps Somali children improve their reading and math skills.
* Translate materials and write newspaper articles as appropriate.
* Ensure that the Somali community is an engaged component of the Lyndale Neighborhood.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Must be bi-lingual - can read, write, and speak Somali and English
* Previous community organizing, leadership development, and youth development experience a plus
* Experience recruiting, organizing, and leading volunteers
* Good computer skills - word processing, databases
* Experience in planning, organizing, and implementing community events
* Experience in facilitating groups or building leadership capacity
* Flexible schedule - evenings and weekends required
Salary: $14 - $17 per hour - based on experience
This is a part-time position (20 to 24 hours per week) that will hopefully expand to 32 - 40 hours in Spring 2012. This position is not eligible for health or retirement benefits at this time.
